Custom Apps for Taxi, Transit, and Ride-Hailing

Transportation app development for transit, taxi, and ride-hailing operators, from the mobile team running MaaS apps in France and Canada rated 4.3 on the App Store.

Transportation App Development for Passenger Services

scope

We build four types of passenger apps. Each can launch on its own or become the first module of a wider mobility product. Operators who plan to unify several transport modes in one product, with shared accounts, payments, and journey data, can find that scope on our Mobility as a Service platform development page.

Transit and Ticketing Apps

Transit and Ticketing Apps

Passengers buy and store tickets on their phone and check departures pulled from real-time schedule data.

Multimodal Trip-Planning Apps

Multimodal Trip-Planning Apps

A single interface lets riders compare and book bus, rail, and taxi options for one journey.

Taxi and Ride-Hailing Apps

Live tracking and automated dispatch connect each rider with the nearest available driver and show the car's approach on a map.

Accessibility-First Apps for Transport Authorities

Accessibility-First Apps for Transport Authorities

Screen-reader support, high-contrast layouts, and step-free route options make the app usable for riders with disabilities.

Taxi and ride-hailing builds reuse the booking, payment, and live-tracking components from the transit apps we run in production. On top of them, we add a driver app and fare controls in the operator back office.

We take the app from requirements analysis to store release.

Dedicated Team

Dedicated Team

We place a dedicated iOS, Android, and QA team inside your product, working from your backlog and tracker. Hiring, replacement, and retention stay on our side, so the engineers who know your product remain on it.

Core Features of a Passenger Transport App

features

The features below form the core scope of our transportation mobile app development work. Each one answers a specific problem for your riders or your operations team.

Real-Time Location Tracking

Riders see vehicle positions and arrival times from live feeds, and the app flags it when a feed goes quiet, so nobody waits on a stale estimate.

Payment Integration

Ticket purchases and card top-ups run through Stripe, with card handling adapted to each region, so one app can sell tickets in Europe and North America.

Non-Authorised Guest Mode

Riders can plan a trip without an account, which removes the sign-up wall for casual and one-off passengers.

Offline Access

Purchased tickets and saved routes stay on the device so that riders can open a ticket underground with no signal.

Trip Rating

Riders rate each trip in the app, which feeds route and service-quality data back to your operations team.

Filtering and Trip Options

Riders narrow results by transport mode, cost, or journey time.

Push Notifications

Trip reminders, route changes, and departure updates reach riders before they arrive at the stop.

Back Office and Analytics

Your staff can adjust mobility settings by region without waiting for a new release, and Matomo shows how riders use routes, purchases, and key features.

For ride-hailing app development, these components connect to live dispatch in one booking flow, from request to rating.

Where Passenger Apps Break, and How We Handle It

approach

  1. When a Feed Goes Quiet
Live vehicle data comes from external systems of varying quality, and a stale feed shows riders a bus that has already left. We build sync for unreliable networks, flag stale data on screen, and keep tickets and routes available offline.
  2. When a Payment Fails Before Departure
A failed purchase a minute before departure becomes a complaint to the operator, and each region has its own card rules, such as Strong Customer Authentication in Europe. We handle payment data under European rules, and QA tests the purchase flow down to the API level.
  3. When Rush Hour Hits
Many riders open the app at once, often on phones low on storage and connections that drop. We keep load and runtime speed in check through regular profiling, the work that nearly halved the Android app in our case study.

Case Study: MaaS Passenger Apps in France and Canada

case study

Client name withheld under NDA

The client runs a Mobility as a Service platform whose regional apps let riders plan a route, buy a ticket, pay for parking, and check live arrival times. Since 2022, Qulix has provided its dedicated iOS, Android and QA team, grown from four engineers to nine.

A Team That Fits the Existing Process

A Team That Fits the Existing Process

Our engineers joined the client's codebase, backlog, tracker, and ceremonies, and work directly with its product and backend teams. Planning stays with the client, while implementation and estimates sit with us.

Apps That Hold Up on the Move

Apps That Hold Up on the Move

We cut the Android app from 140 MB to 75 MB, brought its crash rate down, and built offline access to tickets and routes. The iOS app averages 4.3 stars across roughly 4,800 ratings, and one Android app has passed 100,000 downloads.

Knowledge That Stays with the Product

Knowledge That Stays with the Product

The same team has worked on the product for four years. As the client brings mobile engineering in-house, it has kept four of our engineers to carry that knowledge through the handover.

Stack: Swift and UIKit on iOS, Kotlin and Jetpack Compose on Android, Firebase and Matomo for analytics.

Frequently Asked Questions

questions

Transportation app development is the design and engineering of mobile apps that help passengers plan, book, and pay for journeys. Typical products include taxi, ride-hailing, transit ticketing, and trip-planning apps.

A ride-hailing app is one type of transportation app, focused on booking on-demand car trips. A transportation app is the wider category and can cover buses, rail, taxis, or several modes in one interface.

Yes, an existing transit app can usually be extended with features such as live tracking, in-app payments, or taxi booking. The work starts with a code and architecture audit.

Yes, a transportation app can store purchased tickets and saved routes on the device so they open without a connection. Data syncs once the network returns.
