Case-Study: Pocket PC functionality enhancement

Description

The client, large European communication solutions provider, needed a solution that would add wireless communication functionality in a Pocket PC. Among required features there were design and development of SMS, fax and WAP capabilities that should be executed over the GSM/GPRS communication protocol. Our strong expertise and advanced skills in mobile technologies allowed executing the project before established end date and with greatly reduced costs.

Solution

The solution was developed for a handheld device using Windows CE that should provide a number of computing possibilities to users. Our development team implemented the following features:

• Users can use the Pocket PC as a mobile phone in GSM/GPRS networks.
• Users can dial and store telephone numbers from/in Pocket Outlook contacts, etc.
• Users can receive, compose and send SMS messages using built-in MMS editor.
• Wap mini-browser provides wireless Internet access to users.
• Users can use fax functionality to receive, send, view and reply to fax messages.

Key features

Product development included:

• Development of graphic user interface for all the applications mentioned above
• Development of a special GSM library that interacts with GSM/GPRS stack. It allows to provide such functions as
• Search and lookup including dialogs for Pocket Outlook Contacts.
• Sending, receiving, and storing SMS messages.
• Management and retrieval of activity logs.
• Route low level events (including power management) to appropriate applications.
• Development of title bar application to show the current status of the GSM/GPRS jacket in the title bar, provide easy access to all major applications, hold/manage all centralized settings, and allow control over basic device settings.
